Location of Galway West within Ireland

Galway West is a parliamentary constituency represented in Dáil Éireann, the lower house of the Irish parliament or Oireachtas. The constituency elects 5 deputies (Teachtaí Dála, commonly known as TDs). The method of election is the single transferable vote form of proportional representation (PR-STV).

History and boundaries[]

The constituency was created for the 1937 general election, under the Electoral (Revision of Constituencies) Act 1935, when the former Galway constituency was split into Galway East and Galway West.

It spans the entire area of the western half of County Galway in Connacht, in the heart of the Gaeltacht, taking in Galway city, Clifden and many other areas.

In the Electoral (Amendment) Act 2009, the boundaries of Galway West are defined as:

"The county of Galway, except the parts thereof which are comprised in the constituency of Galway East; and the city of Galway."

Michael D. Higgins, President of Ireland since 2011, previously served as a Labour TD for the constituency from 1981 to 1982 and from 1987 to 2011.
